ABOUT FINBACK

Experience the freshest entrees in Bar Harbor

Open since June 2009, Finback Alehouse is a local Gastro pub, featuring an upscale casual dining atmosphere with a sports-friendly flair. Located in the heart of historic downtown Bar Harbor, Maine, its convenient location and creative dishes attract both the locals and out-of-town visitors with warm hospitality.

Finback Alehouse was originally called Bubba's, established in 1978.  Their family-operated business retired in 2002 when Bubba sold it to a woman who opened Donahue's. After vacating, it was then purchased in 2009 by Matty Haskell, founder and proprietor of Pub Ciao; the parent company of Finback Alehouse.

Our focus is on locally grown all-natural ingredients, using high quality local farmers and fishermen as much as possible.  We put high precedence on using locally-grown vegetables and hand-harvested Maine seafood that uses sustainable harvesting practices.  Every day we get a fresh batch of warm bread from one of Bar Harbor’s very own local bakeries to keep everything we serve our customers of the highest quality and freshest taste.  Whenever possible, we use organic or hand-harvested products.

Finback specializes in fresh seafood, creative craft beers and brew pub style entrees with a family-friendly price structure and wide variety of menu choices.  We carry over 25 different types of beer featuring 16 drafts, 14 local drafts, including our favorite local brewery Black Bear Micro Brewery.

All of our meals are prepared from scratch and our chefs are extremely hands on, taking part in both the menu design, daily specials and offering new ideas to improve our customers’ experience each and every time they visit the Finback Alehouse.

Our approach is through cooperative effort with our staff.  Therefore, we make each and every Finback employee an integral part of our success by embracing their input and feedback.  Ultimately, the satisfaction of our customers is our top priority. We want everyone who dines here to leave fully satisfied and will do so with welcome arms for a return visit to our establishment.

ABOUT THE OWNER

Matthew “Matty” Haskell – Chef / Owner / Operator

Matty.jpgThere’s rarely a day that you won’t find Matty at the Finback Alehouse.  As the owner and operator, he is very hands-on within the operation and does everything in his power to ensure the very best customer experience for both the locals and the tourists who dine here.

Born and raised in Bangor, Maine, Matty studied at the University of Maine but his calling for the entrepreneurial lifestyle beckoned him to delve into the hospitality business. Having been in the restaurant business since the age of 15, this young go-getter bought his first restaurant at the age of 23 in Orono, Maine.  The Bear Brew Pub became one of Orono’s top choices for nearby university students who wanted a fun place to eat, convene and listen to great music.

Having experienced success with the Bear Brew Pub, Matty then opened and acquired the Finback Alehouse in June of 2009 and sold the Bear Brew Pub the following spring.  He attributes his success to great management and creating a team environment that everyone on his staff enjoys being part of.  In fact, most of his employees return to work for him every season.  Matty is also very hands-on and does much of the legwork himself, which further enhances customer loyalty and satisfaction.

Aside from being a diehard Red Sox fan, he enjoys traveling the world and indulging in great food and drink to get ideas for new menu entrees.  Also a talented chef, Matty can be seen on occasion behind the grill or greeting customers with delicious craft beers and ales from behind the bar.  He strives to offer friendly and prompt service, high quality ingredients and firmly believes in using local farmers and all-natural products whenever possible.

Very good food and impressive service.  The lobster roll and bisque were great; all the food was very fresh and tasty.  The beer selection was also nice.

There was one person on staff the afternoon that we came here for lunch, and he was exceptionally attentive.  The food came fast and with a smile.  He was quick to refill our drinks.  When he overheard one member of our party mention that she liked a lot of onions in her salad, he brought her an additional plate of onions.  The waiter expressed as he delivered the food that he didn't like the shape of the fillet he served in the haddock sandwich (as pictured), so he gave it to us for half price.

Overall, a very positive experience.

We stopped into this place because it looked like a good bar.  It is!  It's also a restaurant.

They had a lot of beers on tap including local ones from Bar Harbor and a few from Maine that I hadn't tried.  There's also a cool bar that sort of looks like a boat.

There were lots of people eating, even though it was past 10pm and they supposedly had closed the kitchen.  We sat at the bar and ordered some "nacho fries".  Whoa.  It probably is death on a plate, but it was fantastic.  Instead of tortilla chips, the toppings of the nachos are piled onto waffle fries.  Our evening turned into an impromptu bar crawl and these nachos were definitely a highlight.  Like most places in Bar Harbor, everyone was friendly and we had a great time.

Our party stopped here for an early dinner.  Really friendly server that was attentive and helpful...we'll get to that later.
Appetizers- the wings were delicious!  we got the thai bbq and the regular bbq.  the wings were plump and wonderfully saucy.
Lobster dinner- the lobster was a little small, but nonetheless tasty according to my hubby.
Crab cake sandwich- I'm from Maryland, and would never order a crabcake outside the Chesapeake region...but someone at our table thought it'd be a good idea.  He didn't say it was bad...but I guess I didn't think it looked as tasty as something I would get back home.
Haddock- my sister couldn't even finish the two big chunks of freshly fried fish, but the server said that the cook forgot to fry up a 3rd piece, and he returned in a few minutes with a third piece of golden crispy fish.  Excellent attention to detail and thanks for giving us our money's worth!
Pulled pork sandwich- delicious.  I only got to nibble the edges of it since I got full on the wings and the crispy onion rings.  The hubby ate it for lunch the following day and reported that it was indeed delicious.  I will just have to take his word for it.

So...we were a forgetful bunch when we left the pub...leaving behind some of our gift shop purchases and our camera.  Thankfully our server and another staff member were wonderful and ran out of the restaurant to bring us our things!!! Phew!
